Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is one of the largest tertiary education institutes in New Zealand. It is a subsidiary of Te P?kenga, and a limited liability company, which was formed by merging the Waiariki Institute of Technology and the Bay of Plenty Community College. The purpose of this institute is to partner with industries and communities to deliver innovative programmes and learnings to its students. Its vision is to empower communities and people around the world. Te P?kenga aims to bring together on-the-job, on-campus and online vocational education and training through a unified, sustainable network of regionally accessible provision. In 2020, the institute introduced two new online offshore English language courses to support international students. As per its Annual Report of 2020, more than 91 per cent of students were satisfied with their Toi Ohomai experience.

Toi Ohomai offers students a choice of more than 150 study options encompassing specialities like Business, Creative Arts, Engineering, Forestry, Health and Nursing, Hospitality, Marine Science, Road Transport, Tourism, Trades and more. The institute offers small class sizes and an inclusive, supportive environment. Courses are offered right across the wider Bay of Plenty region including Tauranga, Rotorua, Tokoroa, Taup?, Whakat?ne and more. Eligibility & Documents Required

 

What are the eligibility requirements?

 

In addition to meeting the programme entry requirements, international students must have evidence of receipt of an appropriate visa and need to be over 18 years of age. Applicants between the ages of 14 and 18 years will only be accepted after an assessment of the student’s support systems. International students must demonstrate the ability to meet the English language requirements of the programme in which they enrol, including any professional requirements for English capability. Programme-specific entry requirements include:

  • Certificates and Diplomas (Level 1-7 courses): NCEA level 2 is required for admission with the evidence of ability to complete academic requirements.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Level 7): Applicants are required to have a high school certificate or diploma. The entrance criteria specified by the NZQA and course-specific requirements must be met.
  • Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma (Level 7 courses): Students are required to have an undergraduate degree in any discipline or a minimum of a two-year diploma equivalent to NZQA Level 7 or higher in a related discipline. Applicants can also demonstrate at least three years’ equivalent relevant practical and/or professional experience for admission consideration.
  • Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate (Level 8 courses): A graduate certificate, graduate diploma, or undergraduate degree is required for entry. Five years of practical or professional/practical experience or equivalent is required. Course or subject-specific requirements must be met.
  • Master’s Degree (Level 9): Applicants require a bachelor’s degree or bachelor's degree with honours from a recognised college or university, or demonstrate five years of practical or professional/practical experience or equivalent in the respective field. Course or subject-specific requirements must be met.

 

English Language Requirements

Some of the programmes may have course-specific score requirements, however, international applicants must meet the following minimum English proficiency requirements as per course levels:

New Zealand Qualifications Structure

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has a scale of 10 levels. Bachelor’s degrees are three years in duration. First year starts at Level 5 and Year 3 finishes at Level 7. New Zealand’s three-year degree is at the same level as the final three years of a four-year bachelor’s degree in most countries. This is mainly because New Zealand students complete an extra year at high school.

 

What all documents are needed for application?

 

International applicants must submit verified/certified academic transcripts. A certified document is a photocopy of the original document, signed as being a true and accurate copy. To be considered a verified copy it must have:

  • The words ‘original sighted’
  • The name and signature of the person sighting the original document
  • The date the original was sighted
  • The institution/organisation stamp or handwritten institution/organisation name

 The original documents can be submitted for verification by any one of the following:

  • Notary Public
  • An authorised education agent
  • The New Zealand Consulate or Embassy

 

Apart from transcripts, applicants need to submit the following documents for courses level 1 to 6:

  • High school certificates or diplomas
  • Results from last year at high school
  • Academic record from university or previous tertiary provider
  • Photocopy of the front page of passport with photo ID and details
  • Evidence of English language proficiency
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • Detailed CV/resume
  • Some creative courses may require a portfolio of relevant work
  • Financial documents

Additional documents required for Level 7 and 8 courses are:

  • A 400-word SOP
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Evidence of three years’ work experience

Additional documents required for Level 9 courses are:

  • A 400-word SOP
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Evidence of three years’ work experience
  • Evidence of at least one year of work experience in a managerial position
  • At least two professional letters of recommendation (LORs)

 

Application & Tuition Fees

 

Is there any application fees?

 

There is no application fee for international students. However, students are required to pay an administration fee of NZD 500. The fee is non-refundable.

 

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

 

International applicants need to pay some additional fees and charges apart from the tuition fee, such as the Student Support Levy Fees which may differ as per campus or study mode. An estimated range of tuition fees as per the programme is given below:

Scholarships & Financial Aid

 

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

 

The university offers limited scholarships to international students. However, students can apply for external scholarships offered by individual companies, governments, and other organisations. The EzyMigrate Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice Scholarship is open for international applicants. Under this scheme, an award of NZD 5,000 is offered to female international students enrolled in a Graduate Diploma in the New Zealand Immigration Advice Course. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is mid-February. Students are advised to apply for the scholarship before the deadline. The eligibility criteria are:

  • CV/Resume
  • Proof of acceptance in the course
  • A Letter of Evidence relevant to the programme
  • A letter of explanation describing their career goals, scholarship needs, the commitment to succeed, etc.

When do the admissions start?

 

Toi Ohomai majorly offers admissions in the February and July intakes. A few courses are also available in March, October, November, and December. The deadlines of courses vary, but some of the application deadlines are:

What is the application process?

 

International students are advised to apply at least two to three months in advance. Applicants can apply to the university via any one of these three ways:

  • Online: Complete and submit the online International Student Application Form.
  • Post: Download the PDF application form and post or deliver it to the institute.
  • Agent: Toi Ohomai has many representatives around the world who are authorised to act on the institute’s behalf. These agents can advise students about the programmes and application process.

Students can expect to hear from the institute within four to six weeks. Some departments or courses may take longer to decide on acceptance.

What are the chances to get into this university?

 

Toi Ohomai is not a competitive institution. However, meeting the academic and English requirements may not be enough. Every year, the institute receives more applications, thus, a competitive score may give you an edge over other applicants. Applicants must submit work experience proof and a detailed resume for courses where work experience is required.

Every year, the Institute enrols over 12,000 students from all over the world. In 2020, Toi Ohomai enrolled 10,841 students, including 5,765 full-time equivalent students. As per its annual report of 2020, the institute witnessed a 29% increase in full-time equivalent international student enrolments.

 

Part Time Work While Studying

 

Can I work while studying here?

 

International students can work on-campus or off-campus while studying at the institute. However, students are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during a study semester. During vacations and university holidays, they can work full-time. The job vacancies for students include staff work, social work, and reception work. They also include undertaking jobs as nursing staff, payroll administrators, visiting lecturers, facilitators, and other roles within the study departments.

Off-campus Work: Students can find various off-campus opportunities such as working at bars, cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, boutiques, or department stores or undertaking tutoring, clerical work, farming work, care and cleaning jobs, childcare jobs, etc. Students can also expand their work experience by volunteering for on-campus work or applying for internships. Campuses & Accommodation

 

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

 

Toi Ohomai has five campuses and two branch campuses in New Zealand. It has more than 20 extra delivery sites dotted across the region. These campuses are located in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, and Dunedin.

 

Is on-campus housing available?

 

Toi Ohomai offers student housing options that are within the walking distance from the campus. Students can choose to stay in homestay or boarding (living with a New Zealand family), or the Toi Ohomai owned hostel Tangatarua Hall of Residence next to the Rotorua campus, or in shared student flats near the Tauranga campus, or in privately owned, accredited hostels. The minimum stay at the hostel is two weeks and for a homestay, it is four weeks. After the minimum stay period, students may choose to continue in the same accommodation or make alternative arrangements.
