The names of the Gilman Scholarship recipients are - Shawna Hart, Christopher Smith, Chelsea Elliott, Kevin Harter, Chyanne Reid, Mary Margaret “Maggie” Stakem, Sabrina Thorn, and Braeden Thornton.

8 West Virginia University students get Gilman Scholarships!

Study in US: Eight students of West Virginia University have received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Under this, they will get to travel abroad without worrying about the financial constraints.

Moreover, the U.S. State Department awarded them competitive national awards.

Cate Johnson, assistant director of the ASPIRE Office, said, “International travel is one of the most impactful learning experiences that an undergraduate student can engage in, It’s exciting to see so many WVU students taking advantage of Gilman Scholarship funding year after year.”

Award Winners

The following are the award winners:

  • Chyanne Reid will travel to Ireland. He is a senior biochemistry student from Martinsburg.
  • Kevin Harter will travel to New Zealand and Kevin is a freshman geography major from Ballwin.
  • Chelsea Elliott for travel to Western Europe. Chelsea is a senior landscape architecture major from Morgantown.
  • As part of the WVU Global Medical and Dental Brigades, Christopher Smith will travel to Panama in 2025. Christopher is a junior biomedical engineering major from Point Pleasant.
  • Shawna Hart will travel to the United Kingdom. Shawna is a Bridgeport native enrolled in the Regents Bachelor of Arts program.

About Gilman International Scholarship

It was established in 2001. Under this scholarship till now, over 1,300 U.S. institutions have sent scores of Gilman Scholars to 150 countries worldwide. The scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their internship program costs and education abroad.

"Gilman scholarship recipients can only receive the scholarship once. If a student previously declined a Gilman scholarship, they are welcome to re-apply, as long as they still meet all eligibility requirements listed below," reads the official statement.








An undergraduate student with good academics can apply for this scholarship. The applicant should be a national or citizen of the United States.
