In a joint statement released by the Australian universities, the universities have said that the government should soon address the proposed international student caps. The delay in resolving this can create long-term uncertainty and can damage Australia's education sector's reputation said the statement.

Australia University Sector Urges Urgent Address On International Students Cap

Study in Australia: The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN), Innovative Research Universities (IRU), and Regional Universities Network (RUN) have released a joint statement and urged the government to address the proposed international student caps on an urgent basis and also other unresolved issues related to the ESOS Amendment Bill which seems to have fewer supporters.

The universities have said that if there is not much support for the proposed student visa caps, the government should consider the other components of the bill which focus on improving the integrity and quality of the system.

"Australia’s international education sector is a vital element of our cultural and intellectual exchange with the world, and is a cornerstone of Australia’s economy and communities across the country," reads the joint statement.

Australian Universities Seek Immediate Action

The universities seek immediate action from the government to address the inequities in the current student visa processing and proposed international student caps. They said the delay in addressing these issues and leaving it till 2025 will not only create uncertainty but unfairly punish, institutes, communities and some students.

"We support a balanced international education system that places the interests of students at its heart—prioritising quality, sustainability, diversity and equity. A well-regulated and student-centred approach ensures that Australia remains a destination of choice for talented individuals seeking a world-class education in welcoming and inclusive environments," added the joint statement.

Visa Processing System Must Improve

They requested urgent action to address the distorted visa processing system. The country needs a fairer system where no institutes or students will unfairly face disadvantages.

"we need confidence that visas will be processed efficiently to enable students to take up their places. This must happen this week. If we wait any longer, it will be too late for many students hoping to commence study in our universities in 2025," added the statement.

These universities have demanded that the student visa processing regime should be based on repeatability, transparency and institutional equality. They want an open alliance between all Australian universities and the government to create a shared long-term strategy in the sector to protect and improve the country's reputation as a top-quality and welcoming destination.
