Australian Universities, CSIRO Enter $45 million Partnership

Study in Australia: The Australian Government’s Trailblazer Universities Program facilitated a partnership between universities and Australia’s national science agency CSIRO worth $45 million. The alliance aims to support the unique capabilities advancement in precise manufacturing.

Australia's CSIRO’s Lab22 offers various equipment and technologies for industry use and production. This is the centre for innovation in metallic additive manufacturing.

"Developing Australia’s sovereign capability will make our manufacturing more sustainable and will create new job opportunities for the industries of tomorrow, said Assistant Minister For Education, Senator Anthony Chisholm.

“The Trailblazer Program forms part of the Albanese Government’s key focus area of investing in manufacturing – because we want to see our local economies strengthened, increased innovation from our universities and an uptick in jobs for those with the skills to make things here in Australia," added the minister.

About Lab22

It has a PX100 Digital Metal Binder Jet System which provides a better alternative over conventional metal manufacturing. Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer’s PX100 Digital Metal Binder Jet System support high volume metal production.

The lab has Innovative Launch, Automation, Novel Materials, Communications and Hypersonics (ILAuNCH)'s Nikon SLM-280 2MA (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) to make space missions more efficient and affordable by creating faster, lighter and more robust space components.

Defence Trailblazer’s Robotic Additive Manufacturing Cell helps many industries including space applications. It is a flexible and extremely adaptive system which supports large format 3-D printing and prototyping for various industries and defence as well.

More Details

A total of 6 national priority areas in domestic manufacturing are supported by the $370.3 million Trailblazer Universities Program. These six areas include defence, critical minerals, space, food, waste recycling and renewables. The government's program intends to bring around $648 million of co-investment from industry.

"Over four years, six Australian universities will become leaders in research commercialisation, with dedicated investment in priority areas. Each Trailblazer university will receive $50 million, which will be matched by university and industry partner contributions. The total funding includes $45 million for participating universities to partner with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), which will provide them with access to specialist equipment and expertise to support the delivery of their projects," reads the government's statement.
