Bloomberg Philanthropies help to provide free tuition for Johns Hopkins medical students
However, it is not for all students but for those whose family income is less than $300,000 a year. Johns Hopkins University thanked $1 billion financial aid gift which will make tuition-free medical education for most of the students.
Study in US: Bloomberg Philanthropies recently announced a $1 billion gift to Johns Hopkins University's medical school to make tuition-free medical education possible for most of the students who have limited means. This funding will also help students financially at its public health, schools of nursing and other graduate schools.
Medical and nursing education are costly which keeps many talented students away from these courses and as a result, the demand for skilled medical professionals is increasing in the US and it also exacerbates the decline in U.S. life expectancy.
Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg L.P said, “As the U.S. struggles to recover from a disturbing decline in life expectancy, our country faces a serious shortage of doctors, nurses, and public health professionals – and yet, the high cost of medical, nursing, and graduate school too often bars students from enrolling. By reducing the financial barriers to these essential fields, we can free more students to pursue careers they’re passionate about – and enable them to serve more of the families and communities who need them the most.”
Tuition-free medical education to start in fall 2024
The university will start to offer free tuition to medical students whose total family income is below $300,000 a year this fall. This income bracket has 95% of all Americans. Around two-thirds of aspiring students who want to pursue a MD degree from the university qualify for free tuition.
This financial shot in arm by the Bloomberg Philanthropies will not only help medical students but also the students of the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins’ School of Education, School of Advanced International Studies, Carey School of Business, Peabody Institute, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and the upcoming School of Government and Policy.
Ron Daniels, president of Johns Hopkins University said, "Extraordinary talent exists in every community across America, a fact borne out by the transformative impact of Mike Bloomberg's historic gift for financial aid to Hopkins undergraduates six years ago that dramatically expanded the breadth of experience and accomplishment of our student body. Removing financial barriers to individual opportunity fuels excellence, innovation, and discoveries that redound to the benefit of society."
