Study in Canada: Those who are planning to submit their study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, must meet the new PGWP requirements.
To manage the temporary resident arrivals, Canada has announced changes to its Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP) for foreign students. Those who are going to submit study permit applications on or after November 1, 2024, need to meet these new requirements.
Even those candidates who will submit their study permit application before November 1, 2024, but apply for PGWP on or after November 1, 2024, must also meet the new requirements.
Canada announces new PGWP conditions: Details
Applicants who completed their bachelor's degree, master's degree or doctoral degree from a university should meet the following language requirements:
- They must prove their French or English language skills by submitting a minimum of Niveaux de competence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) 7 in French or Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 7 in English in all 4 language areas.
- All subjects are eligible and there are no additional subject requirements.
In case, the applicant completes graduation from any other university's program:
- They must be a graduate in an eligible subject.
- Must meet the language requirement which is a minimum of NCLC 7 in French or CLB 7 in English in all 4 language areas.
Those who graduated from a college program or other programs must have French or English language skills with at least NCLC 5 in French or CLB 5 in English.
The language ability should be in the following areas - reading, writing, listening and speaking.
"Your test results must be less than 2 years old when you submit your application," reads the official notification.
For the English language, Canada will accept the following tests - CELPIP: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program, IELTS: International English Language Testing System, and PTE Core: Pearson Test of English. For French language, they accepts - TEF Canada: Test d’évaluation de français and TCF Canada: Test de connaissance du français.
Canada's government recently announced that it will further reduce the study permit by another 10%. The country is among the countries that are trying to control their immigration despite the universities being worried about the policy changes.
