Amid the ongoing pro-Palestine protest on the Columbia University campus, where the classes are now being conducted in online mode, President Minouche Shafik announced the midnight deadline for dismantling the protest.

In her notification, she said that the small group of faculty, administrators, and University Senators have been in talks with the student organizers to discuss the basis for dismantling the encampment. Those talks are facing a deadline of midnight tonight to reach an agreement, she added.

President Minouche Shafik said she respects the right to demonstrate, fully supports the importance of free speech, and recognizes that many of the protestors have gathered peacefully. However, as per her, the encampment raises serious safety concerns, has created a tense and hostile environment and disrupted campus life.

"It's past midnight, and turnout of students and faculty has filled the entire plaza of Columbia University. An end to US complicity in the genocide of Gaza remains their focus, they insist, despite media attempts to divert attention to issues like student safety or free speech," says one of the messages on the X platform.

"Earlier today, it leaked that Columbia University threatened in negotiations to SIC THE NATIONAL GUARD ON ITS OWN STUDENTS. This message from CU President Minouche Shafik seems to confirm such as she proclaims that negotiations have a deadline of 12 AM. This is an egregious threat to the student body. Minouche Shafik is dancing with the threat of another Kent State. She would rather her students face deadly force than to divest from Israel’s genocide against Palestinians," says another message on the X platform.
