University Of Warwick Gets £2.5 Million Funding For Research Into Language Policy In Europe

The University of Warwick is all set to lead a new study which is being conducted in partnership between nine universities in nine countries. This study is going to explore language policy across Europe.

The research project is titled Strategies to Strengthen European Linguistic Capital in a Globalised World (MultiLX) and it will be led by Professor Angela Creese at the University of Warwick. She is from the Department of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick.

"By conducting ethnographic observations in Barcelona, Berlin, Lucerne, Oslo, Santiago de Compostela and Turin, academics will gain a comprehensive knowledge of the everyday language practices of young people, including their digital practices. With this evidence we will make recommendations for an equitable language policy in Europe which reflects young people’s semiotic repertoires," she said.

Other universities participating in the study include Pädagogische Hochschule Luzern (Edina Krompák), University of Limerick (Helen Kelly-Holmes), Jyväskylän yliopisto (Sari Pietikäinen), University of Glasgow (Bernadette O'Rourke), Università degli Studi di Torino (Gerardo Mazzaferro), Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet Freiburg (Katharina Brizic), Fundació per a la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Maite Puigdevall Serralvo and Joan Pujolar Cos), and Universitetet i Oslo (Pia Lane).

Eight-Year Fellowship Awarded To Warwick Biochemist For Research Into Antibiotic Drug Resistance

A biochemist from the University of Warwick, Dr Melissa Webby has been awarded Wellcome Career Development Award for research on combating antimicrobial drug resistance. The eight-year fellowship is worth £2.2 million and it is combined with the support from Howard Dalton Centre. Under this project, she will hire three postdoctoral associates.

Dr Webby, at Warwick’s School of Life Sciences, commented, “It is a big honour for my research to be recognised because this award is so competitive. Pursuing your own research interests is something that many scientists aspire to build towards and is an emotionally demanding journey. The Fellowship for Deconstructing Energised Associations that build and maintain the Gram-negative bacterial cell envelope offers eight years of funding to pursue my research passion, which is wonderful. I am also extremely grateful to the support from mentors, collaborators, and my current PI Colin Kleanthous, who fostered and encouraged me throughout my journey here”
