European Study Destinations See Surge in Indian Students: Report Projects Over 500% Growth for Italy by 2030
The number of International students going to Germany is expected to grow by 298% from 28,700 (2021) to approximately 114,500 students. Similarly, France is likely to see over 200% growth, particularly in Indian students, supported by scholarships and favourable policies.
A Report, the European Student Landscape: Beyond Beds and Benches on Mobility of International Students by University Living launched during the Global Education Conclave 2024 in New Delhi states that Spain is projected a 280% rise in Indian student enrollment. While, Italy is estimated 540% increase in Indian student enrollments, indicating strong appeal for higher education.
While commenting at the report's launch, Saurabh Arora, Founder & CEO of University Living Accommodation, said, “As education becomes increasingly internationalized, Europe has solidified its position as one of the top destinations, offering students unparalleled academic and cultural experiences. Together, we aim to shape the future of international education. We are proud to launch our latest report, European Student Landscape: Beyond Beds and Benches 2024. This report sheds light on the comprehensive student experience across countries like Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Austria, and Malta. It covers critical areas such as student mobility, education systems, accommodation trends, and cultural integration. Our goal is to equip students, parents, institutions, and stakeholders with the insights needed to enhance international student experiences and foster stronger collaboration in this evolving landscape.”
Study Abroad: Preferences, Challenges
European countries will see an increase in popularity due to post-study work opportunities and high-quality education. The challenges faced by international students will be to find secure and affordable accommodation which should be addressed for sustained growth.
The report also said that in 2023, international students contributed nearly €16.77 billion annually across the seven European countries which includes Portugal, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Malta, and Austria. The main source of economic contributions were the real estate developments, rental income and associated business activities. Consequently, Europe is focusing more on the student housing infrastructure to accommodate the growing student population and retain its leadership in the study abroad top destinations.
To support the growing number of international students, the report highlighted the need for more collaborations among the universities, governments and private sectors and to make modern housing available to international students at affordable prices.
