Five University Of California Affiliated Scientists Win 2024 Nobel Prizes

Study in US: Five Scientists who have spent significant time at the University Of California have won the 2024 Nobel Prizes. They are from different fields such as Chemistry, Economics, Physics, and Medicine. They were at the university as researchers, students and faculties and they were mentored by their Nobel Prize-winning colleagues.

Since the inception of the Nobel Prize, a total of 71 faculty of UC have received this prestigious award.

University Of California Winners Of 2024 Nobel Prizes

Following are the five winners:

David Baker won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. He shared his prize and was recognized for his work in building proteins. He earned his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1989.

“In 2003, David Baker succeeded in using these blocks to design a new protein that was unlike any other protein. Since then, his research group has produced one imaginative protein creation after another, including proteins that can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors," said the Nobel Prize committee.

Geoffrey Hinton won the Nobel Prize in physics. He was a visiting professor at the UC and did his postdoc at UC San Diego. He is a British-Canadian scientist and also known as thegodfather of AI”. He received the Nobel Prize for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence.

“The laureates’ work has already been of the greatest benefit. In physics we use artificial neural networks in a vast range of areas, such as developing new materials with specific properties, says Ellen Moons, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.

John Hopfield won the Nobel Prize in physics. He was a former Assistant Professor at the University of California Berkeley. Along with Hinton, he also shares this year's Nobel Prize in physics.

The Nobel Foundation said, "foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks."

James A. Robinson won the Nobel Prize in economics. He is a former faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. He shares the Nobel Prize with his research partners Simon Johnson and Daron Acemoğlu, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is now a faculty at the University of Chicago.

UC Berkeley alumnus Gary Ruvkun has won the 2024 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. He is a Professor at Harvard Medical School.

“Ambros and Ruvkun’s seminal discovery in the small worm C. elegans was unexpected, and revealed a new dimension to gene regulation, essential for all complex life forms," said the Nobel Committee.
