India Sent Maximum Students To US, Says US Ambassador

Over the years, the number of Indian students going to the US to study abroad has increased greatly, said US Ambassador Eric Garcetti.

Study in US: US Ambassador Eric Garcetti has revealed numbers showing that of late more and more Indian students have joined higher education institutes in the the US.

His message on X reads, "I'm thrilled to share that, with over 330,000 students, India has sent more students to the U.S. than any other country this year! This is International Education Week. Let’s celebrate the power of education to build tomorrow’s leaders and deepen our bonds. I came to India first as a 19-year-old student, and I know firsthand the value of these exchanges. Here’s to our continuing vibrant education partnership moving the #USIndia forward together!"

For the first time in 2009, India sent more students to study in the US than any other country in the world. More than 330,000 Indian students pursued education in the United States for Higher Education in 2023-2024. This was a 23% increase over the previous year. Every Indian student in the US plays an integral role in bringing our countries closer together whether working side by side in a science lab working, on cutting-edge research, exploring new cultural opportunities in a new city or community or experiencing new customs and traditions with a local family, the impact of international educational exchange is transformational and long-lasting, he said.

US Students Coming To India Up By 300%

"And this goes both ways. That's why our mission invites US students to come and study here in India to experience its incredible diversity, learn from its breathtaking traditions, and bring those experiences back home to America. Last year, the number of US students who studied in India rose by a whopping 300%. Today's students will become tomorrow's leaders who will derive this relationship as one of the most consequential and critical in the world forward and your international experience will inform decision-making, understanding and appreciation of the partnership of the future," he added.

US Has Maximum Capacity To Host International Students: Report

IIE’s 75th annual Open Doors report has revealed that international student numbers in the US have increased by 7% over the previous year which is at an all time high.

“With nearly 4,000 education institutions overall, the US has the most capacity to host more international students. International students make up just 6% of total US higher education enrolment,” said Mirka Martel, IIE’s head of research, evaluation and learning, as reported by The Pie News.

“The next four to five years are going to show a lot of growth in international students coming to the US”, said IIE CEO Allan Goodman.
