Indian forms largest group of international students in Germany: DAAD data

For the second year, Indians formed the largest group of foreign students in Germany, according to the DAAD data.

Study in Germany: While aspirants are giving second thoughts to countries like Australia, and the UK due to the changing immigration policies, some countries also gaining popularity among study-abroad aspirants. One such country is Germany, which saw an increase in international students from India. In the last five years, the number has doubled.

“Indian student numbers in Germany continue to be on the rise. The number has more than doubled in the last five years. Indian students now form the largest international community in Germany for the second year in a row,” reads the official statement of the DAAD report.

As per the report, Indians form the largest group of foreign students in Germany. The number has increased by 15.1% against the previous year. During the winter semester 2023-2024, the number stood at 49483.

Federal Statistical Office, Germany data also released the subject-wise enrolment. Engineering saw the highest number of students, up to 60%, followed by Law, Management and Social Studies - 21% Indian students, Mathematics and Natural Sciences - 13%, and others - 5%. The German universities have 56% enrolment of Indians whereas the University of Applied Sciences has 44%.








Study in Germany: Options for Indians

The universities offer various levels of education for international students including bachelor, master, and PhD studies. The master's program in Germany sees enrolment from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh.







Each university in Germany has its own set of criteria for admission. The applicant must check on the official website of the university for the university and program-specific criteria.

For general information, to get admission into the master’s program, the candidates should have a four-year bachelor's degree from their home countries. Mostly if you have a four-year bachelor's degree and meet other criteria you are considered eligible for admission. In case the bachelor's degree was for three years only, prior to applying for admission, the candidate must be in touch with the course coordinator

“Some universities may ask for your TOEFL/IELTS/GRE/GMAT scores. For example, GMAT may be asked for, if you want to study economics or law. Universities will ask for very good German language skills in case you want to take up a programme in German medium. In such case, your knowledge of German needs to be certified through examinations like the TestDaF or DSH,” added the official statement.
