Study In Australia: Deakin University Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Deakin University recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Also, the university received an extraordinary gift last month which will help it to shape its future.

Late Dr Lewis and Libby Hughes granted $1.64 million to the university. It is the biggest bequest ever received by the University. The grant will help in offering stipends to PhD and post-doctoral education students. A stipend of more than $25,000 will be offered for three years.

Deakin University's Biggest Bequest Details

Dr Lewis and Libby Hughes were passionate about lifelong learning. While speaking with the university in 2018, they said that they want to inspire future generations to value lifelong learning.

"We believe that the measure of one's life is centred on what you contribute, not about what assets you have. Through supporting educators—both researchers and practitioners—we create ripples of impact that extend far beyond the classroom," said Lewis.

Two Deakin University Early Career Researchers Named Superstars Of Stem

Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic named two early career researchers of the Deakin Univeristy as the Superstars Of STEM. Thunderstorm Asthma researcher and PhD student Kira Hughes and Dr Fariha Jaigirdar, a researcher, lecturer, and AI enthusiast from the School of Information Technology are the Superstars Of Stem.

Dr Jaigidar, Head of Deakin's School of Information Technology Professor Trina Myers said, "Fariha is an inspiring young researcher and role model for girls in stem. Her work in investigating cybersecurity solutions is groundbreaking. I love to investigate and apply cybersecurity knowledge in various domains including Internet of Things (IoT), digital health, recordkeeping and Artificial Intelligence. I want people to understand the power of acceptability, diversity and inclusion. I want people to know STEM, to love STEM and to dream for STEM despite being who they are and what they believe. Superstars of STEM would bring that platform for me to reach those above goals."
