22.2% projected growth in Indian student enrolments from 2023 to 2025, with a staggering 540.9% rise expected by 2030.

A recent study projects a 22.2% growth in Indian student enrolments in Italy from 2023 to 2025, with a staggering 540.9% rise expected by 2030.

Italian universities now offer over 600 programs in English, making education more accessible to non-Italian speakers. Italy is attracting Indian students with its affordable tuition, scholarship opportunities, rich cultural heritage, and alignment with European academic standards.

The report, “From Enrolment to Accommodation: Unlocking Italy’s Education System,” published by University Living, provides a comprehensive analysis of Italy’s growing appeal as a study abroad destination for Indian and international students. It examines the country’s academic framework, visa trends, scholarship opportunities, and evolving dynamics in student accommodation.

As global education becomes increasingly competitive, Indian students are exploring new horizons beyond traditional destinations like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Italy has emerged as a key destination, known for its historic universities, quality academic programs, and cultural richness. In 2023 alone, over 93,000 international students were studying in Italy, with more than 6,100 of them being of Indian origin, reflecting the country’s growing reputation in the global education sector.

The report highlights that Italy’s affordability, combined with a robust academic infrastructure, has played a significant role in this surge. Italian universities offer world-class education with tuition fees much lower than many other European countries. Trends suggest a 22.2% increase in Indian student enrolments by 2025, driven by expanding middle-class aspirations, scholarships, and better job prospects.

Speaking at the event, Antonio Bartoli, Ambassador of Italy to India, said, "Italy is proud to welcome an increasing number of Indian students, who bring immense talent and diversity to our academic institutions. The 600+ courses in English and strong cultural and educational ties between Italy and India create a favorable environment for students to thrive both academically and personally. We are committed to supporting this growing community with accessible education, scholarships, and enriched student experiences."

At the report launch, Saurabh Arora, Founder & CEO of University Living, remarked, "With the rising cost of education globally, Indian students are increasingly seeking destinations that offer both academic excellence and affordability. Italy provides the perfect blend of high-quality education, a rich cultural experience, and relatively lower tuition fees. With more than 600 courses available in English across institutions, Italy is emerging as a sound choice for Indian students who are now becoming an integral part of Italy's educational landscape."

With projections showing a 540.9% growth in Indian students in Italy by 2030, the country is poised to become a major destination for Indian aspirants. Arkaprabha Biswas, Coordinator for Uni-Italia India activities, added, “As an Indian national working within the Italian ecosystem, it is heartening to see the Indian diaspora flourishing in Italy. Looking ahead, our shared objective is to collaborate in recognizing talented members of the diaspora who can serve as ambassadors to enhance the academic relationship between Italy and India. This journey is inclusive, with all stakeholders, both in academia and beyond, playing an equally important role in fostering this bilateral partnership.”
