Student Accommodation Report Reflects Australia Still Attractive For International Students
Amber Australia Student Accommodation Annual Report 2024-25 highlights that despite the changing immigration policies and fear among the university sector, the country continues to be a top choice for studying abroad among international students.
Study in Australia: Amber has released the Australia Student Accommodation Annual Report (2024-25) which highlights the student housing market insights and trends. The report highlighted that Australia is still a popular study-abroad destination for international students thanks to its vibrant lifestyle and world-class universities.
“This year’s enrollment numbers show a consistent interest from international students. However, due to the revised policies, the student visa grants in Australia have significantly dipped by 31% from July to December 2023, compared to the same time frame last year. It is yet to be seen what the impact of the capping of international students at 270,000 for 2025 will be. This report aims to uncover how the market might react to the ongoing changes,” said Madhur Gujar, Co-Founder & Chief Business Officer at Amber.
Madhur Gujar added, “The report aims to equip stakeholders with strategic market knowledge. Demand for Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) is expected to rise by 20% in the next three years, alongside growing investment in the BTR sector, signalling strong market opportunities.”
Australia Student Accommodation Annual Report 2024: Details
The report highlighted that 20 universities in Australia are ranked in QS Top 300 for 2024. It includes universities such as the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, and the University of Melbourne.
In May 2024, the number of international students in Australia was 701,262, which reflects rapid growth in enrolments. In 2023, international students in the country contributed A$48 billion in revenue to the Australian economy.
The report projected that international student enrolment is expected to decrease due to changed policies. Amber predicted that it will be 662,496 in 2028.
Recently, the government also implemented various policies to curb the increasing migration in Australia. The university sector has been raising concerns against these implementations, especially against the international students’ enrolment cap. The sector fears that this will result in the decreasing popularity of Australian universities in world rankings. In the recently released THE World University Rankings 2025, Australian universities' rankings were slightly dipped.
Australia To Provide New Work and Holiday Visas To Young Indian Citizens
Now, Indian citizens in the age group of 18 to 30 can apply for work and holiday visas through a visa pre-application (ballot). Australia will grant a maximum of 1,000 eligible Indian citizens these visas (subclass 462) annually. Interested passport holders can register for the visa ballot in this month by October 31, 2024. The candidates will be selected through a random selection process between October 14, 2024, to April 30, 2025.
Australia’s Assistant Minister for Immigration, Matt Thistlethwaite said, "This will provide an opportunity for 1,000 young Indians between the ages of 18-30 to work or study for one year while experiencing the Australian lifestyle. This visa symbolizes the strengthening economic and cultural ties between our two countries," as reported by Business Today.
