Study Abroad: 17 Florida State University earn Gilman Scholarship
Gilman International Scholarship offers US students with limited financial means an opportunity to study abroad or do an internship in foreign countries. It funds up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study or internships for college credit. The students must have a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application to apply for this scholarship.
A total of seventeen Florida State University students are selected for the Gilman Scholarship. This scholarship is funded by the U.S. Department of State to provide students the opportunity to study or do internships in foreign countries.
Jesse Wieland, associate director of the Office of National Fellowships said, “We are thrilled for the 17 FSU students nominated for Gilman Scholarships this year and are excited to see their dreams of studying abroad come to life. We have students representing our Tallahassee and Panama City campuses engaging in diverse programs that fit their academic and personal interests, which highlights the flexibility of this award and how our students put in the effort to find opportunities crucial to their own growth and development.”
To be eligible for the Gilman Scholarship, the candidates must have received the Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or they can also be providing proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.
Gilman Scholarship 2024: More Details
This year, two students will use the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Costa Rica this summer. These students are - Kate Deviney and Chelsea Brown.
Kate Deviney is a political science major minoring in Spanish. She will study the Spanish language and conversation through an external provider in San Joaquin de Flores, Heredia Province in Costa Rica.
“As a pre-law student from South Florida, I’ve observed the increasing significance of Spanish as a predominant language in the region. I aspire to bridge the communication gap and provide legal assistance to Spanish-speaking communities. This experience will not only enhance my professional capabilities but also enable me to effectively connect with and advocate for clients from varied cultural backgrounds in my future legal career," she said.
Chelsea Brown will also study abroad in the Heredia Province in Costa Rica this summer. Other recipients of this scholarship are using the scholarship to study abroad in London this summer. Sabrina Jacques, a nursing major, and Alexis Rister, a criminology major will participate in the Broad Curriculum Program at the FSU London Study Centre through International Programs.
