Study In US: Saint Louis University-Madrid Studies Impact Of Studying Abroad

Saint Louis University-Madrid hosts hundreds of international students every year coming from SLU-St. Louis and other partnership institutions. Those who complete their entire undergraduate degree at SLU-Madrid include more than 75 nationalities.

Three students of the university including Sena Segbefia, Rhea Ibarra and Yelica Espinosa participated in a study under their project "capstone" in psychology major terms. The project was titled "The Impact of Studying Abroad on Career Outcomes."

"SLU-Madrid's international environment and culturally diverse campus played a huge role in shaping our capstone project. Being surrounded by students from all over the world naturally sparked an interest in how studying abroad impacts personal growth and career outcomes," said Espinosa.

"With my experiences at both SLU's main campus and SLU-Madrid, it sparked curiosity about the impact of studying abroad on career growth and personality," said Ibarra.

Findings Of Study On Significance Of Study Abroad By SLU-Madrid

They analysed the effects of studying abroad around the big five personality traits known as "OCEAN," which stands for openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Through their study, they found positive changes in students in all these categories.

They found that studying abroad opportunity offers a platform for professional networking which can help in getting jobs later on and 80% of students get proficient in a second language within one year which again increases their employability.

"I do feel like my personality aligns with our findings. Over my four years here at SLU-Madrid, I have become more open and willing to try new things as I adapt to a culture that is not my own," said Segbefia.

"The capstone has influenced me to appreciate the career options I have been presented because of my time in Spain. Understanding how studying abroad impacts our career outcomes has allowed me to look deeper into how I can maximize the skills I've gained abroad in a work environment," she added.

"If you're hesitant about studying at SLU-Madrid, I'd say take the leap - you won't regret it. This experience is more than just earning a degree; it's about learning who you are in an entirely new context. The friendships you'll make, the global perspective you'll gain, and the personal growth you'll experience are priceless. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and discover what you're truly capable of," said Espinosa.
