TUS Joins 15 Universities In Ireland Against Gender-Based Violence

A few days ago, Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) collaborated with 15 more universities in Ireland to support the global campaign ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’.

"TUS supports survivors of sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic abuse, coercive control and stalking regardless of age, gender or sexual orientation. We provide a safe space for you to be heard, offering free support and advice to those who have been impacted by sexual harassment or violence. If you would like to make an appointment, please email: svh@tus.ie. You do not have to provide any information in your communication," reads the TUS message on the X platform.

Rabiya Ali, Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Manager at TUS said, “This campaign highlights the importance of higher education institutions working together on the issue of gender-based violence. We know that in Ireland 3 in 5 people aged 18-25 have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, intimate relationship abuse (Women’s Aid, 2021). These staggering figures needed an urgent collective response, and with our unique roles within universities, we agreed to work together on this important prevention campaign. While TUS coordinated the campaign, it was created by SVH and EDI managers from across the sector, with everyone contributing to its development and roll-out across the country. This is a collaborative effort, and I am so grateful to all our partner institutions”.

All participating universities will work together to raise awareness, drive change and encourage members of the community to participate in the 16 Days of Activism which includes campaigns and events both online and offline to engage, educate and empower the participants to work against gender-based violence.

Participants are expected to promote zero tolerance, engage leaders, support local women's organizations and share awareness using #NoExcuse.

“Violence against women and girls is not inevitable – it can and must be stopped. By standing together and using our voices, we can turn awareness into action, creating a safer and more equal society for all,” said a spokesperson for UNiTE.

Minister Burke Praises DREAMBIG

ATIM (Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing) Cluster is leading the DREAMBIG programme which engages 91 young people for an introduction to careers in advanced manufacturing.

Peter Burke, TD, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, commented, “For Ireland’s manufacturing base to remain competitive, especially here in the Midlands, we need to equip our young people with the skills and confidence to pursue careers in advanced manufacturing. The DREAM BIG programme is a shining example of what can be achieved when industry, local government and education come together to create opportunities for our youth."
