University of Auckland gets new Dean of Science - Sarah Young
Professor Sarah Young will join the University of Auckland as the new Dean of Science in October. Currently, she is the Executive Dean, of the Faculty of Science at the University of Canterbury.
Study in New Zealand: University of Auckland has announced the appointment of a new Dean of Science - Professor Sarah Young. She will join her new position in October 2024. She will come in place of the current Dean Professor John Hosking who will retire soon.
She is currently working at the University of Canterbury as executive dean in the Faculty of Science. At the University of Canterbury, she is also a senior leadership team member.
While commenting on her appointment, Sarah Young said, “I see it as a privilege to be able to lead such an outstanding and comprehensive faculty. I look forward to working with the kaimahi and tauira and continuing to build a collegial and supportive academic environment focused on excellence.”
More about Professor Sarah Young
Prior to the University of Canterbury, she was the head of the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney and before that, she served in a range of leadership positions which also included Deputy Dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago.
She is also an expert in education and curriculum development. In 2000, she earned her PhD in Immunology from the University of Otago. She is a board member of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and also the current board chair of the Institute of Environmental Science and Research. She has recently overseen a review of BSc and MSc programmes at the University of Canterbury.
Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland ink agreement for Plant & Food Research
Recently, the University of Auckland has inked a MoU with Waipapa Taumata Rau for Plant & Food Research. The agreement was signed by the Plant & Food Research’s Chief Scientist Richard Newcomb and the University of Auckland’s Dean of Science, Professor John Hosking.
Vivien Kirk, Faculty of Science’s Associate Dean Postgraduate Research (Doctoral) said, “The Joint Graduate School provides a platform for the complementary capabilities and facilities of the University and Plant and Food research to be combined, enabling richer experiences for postgraduate students and broader opportunities for research collaboration. The University is delighted that its ongoing commitment to collaboration with Plant and Food Research has been formalised in this renewed agreement.”
