University of Melbourne Establishes Global Humanities Alliance

Study in Australia: University of Melbourne has joined forces with various other universities around the world to create the Global Humanities Alliance (GHA). The university has partnered with the University of Manchester, Ashoka University, Mahidol University, Universitas Gadjah Mada, the University of Nairobi, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and the University of Toronto.

Under the partnership, the universities aim to boost the political, social and profile of the humanities and social sciences globally. The Letter of Intent was signed by the representatives of these eight universities at the University of Manchester.

Professor Jennifer Balint, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne commented, “The GHA is a key element of the University’s Advancing Melbourne Globally Strategy, which outlines our global vision and reinforces our commitment to serving as a knowledge hub for Asia and the Pacific through education and research partnerships. The Faculty of Arts looks forward to progressing this critical work in the years ahead.”

About Global Humanities Alliance

It is an initiative of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. GHA was developed over many years to bring students and scholars of diverse global perspectives for discussion. Initially, the alliance will establish four core working groups on themes - decolonising knowledge, sustainability and climate change, public humanities, and digital transformation.

Under this partnership, 75 scholars from these universities are planning future teaching initiatives and joint research.

“A core value of the GHA is that by combining our complementary and distinctive strengths we can better address key global challenges and showcase the difference humanities, social sciences and liberal arts make to the world. “Over the course of 2025 the GHA hopes to deepen the teaching and research relationships across the partner institutions,” said the University of Melbourne’s Professor Kate McGregor, Associate Dean International at the Faculty of Arts.
