University Of Queensland Enters New Partnership To Strengthen Drug Discovery, Development
University of Queensland has entered a new partnership with global biotech company Molecule to Medicine (MTM) which is expected to strengthen its drug, discovery, and development.
Study in Australia: The University of Queensland's new partnership between global biotech company Molecule to Medicine (MTM) and UniQuest is going to strengthen the university's capabilities in drug discovery and development.
UniQuest CEO Dr Dean Moss commented, “MTM is renowned for bringing together the right people, funding and innovative technologies to create successful biotech companies with the capability to advance new therapies for patients that need them. This partnership brings potential treatments a step closer to the clinic, with investment from the UniQuest Extension Fund.”
Initial Focus On Alzheimer, Parkinson's Diseases
The company will initially focus on treating diseases related to neuroinflammation such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and motor neurone disease.
“This is an example of the fund delivering on its mandate to foster new technologies from UQ and enable the creation of a new biotech company here in Brisbane,” he said.
“The quality of UQ’s research is recognised internationally and we are keen to build on our relationship with UniQuest by collaborating to advance innovative discoveries and help bridge the translational gap,” said MTM chairperson Dr Tom McCarthy.
“The culture at MTM fosters innovation to create and scale biotech companies designed to maximise the translation of cutting-edge research into successful clinical development programs,” added Ms McCarthy.
UQ Academics Named Social Science Fellows
School of Business strategic management expert Professor Paula Jarzabkowski, distinguished Emeritus Professor Aileen Moreton-Robinson, and Director of Centre for Policy Futures Professor Greg Marston have been selected as 20 new social science fellows. They are selected for their valuable contributions to research across strategic management, social justice and equity, and Indigenous studies.
Volunteers Recruitment For Clinical Trial Of Vaccine
Vicebio, the vaccine company has developed a new vaccine with the University of Queensland. The recruitment of volunteers is underway for the clinical trial.
UQ virologist Professor Keith Chappell, co-inventor of the molecular clamp said, “Both RSV and hMPV infections have surged throughout Australia in recent years and there is a real need to explore new proactive protection and prevention options. It is exciting to see this home-grown technology used to develop a unique vaccine to potentially prevent respiratory illness caused by these two viruses."
