After introducing the absurd bill now Republican U.S. senators have come up with another bill to ban student loan forgiveness for protestors convicted of demonstrating in the US campus.
Pro-Palestine protests in the US: The Republican U.S. senators have introduced a new bill to ban student loan forgiveness for pro-Palestine protestors convicted of the crime.
U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. filed No Bailouts for Campus Criminals Act with multiple cosponsors. The bill is to ban students convicted of any offence under federal or state law while demonstrating at the colleges from having their federal student loans waived, modified, forgiven or cancelled, as reported by Tennessee.
“Americans who never went to college or responsibly paid off their debts shouldn’t have to pay off other people’s student loans. They especially shouldn’t have to pay off the loans of Hamas sympathizers shutting down and defacing campuses,” Cotton said.
North Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee approves controversial bill to ban wearing masks in public
The bill is introduced to prohibit the wearing of masks in public. This bill comes in the wake of protests that have erupted on US campuses across the country in response to the Gaza war.
“We’re really just resetting the law to what it was pre-COVID. That’s really what the purpose is now, is to deal with organizations and individuals who are intent on breaking the law and hiding their identity, and using the hiding of their identity as a way to intimidate other people — to get away with it," said Sen. Buck Newton (R-Greene, Wayne and Wilson), who sponsored the “committee substitute,” as reported by NC Newsline.
Biden govt extends deadline for student loan forgiveness
The U.S. Department of Education has extended the key deadline for student loan forgiveness to June 30, 2024, from an earlier deadline of April 30, 2024. Until June 30, the students enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan who consolidate will get a one-time adjustment on their payment count. The students had requested a loan consolidation by June 30, to combine their federal student loans into one new federal loan.
The U.S. Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal said in a statement, "The Department is working swiftly to ensure borrowers get credit for every month they’ve rightfully earned toward forgiveness,” as reported by CNBC.
US Campus Protest: Biden administration issues title VI reminder
U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in its May letter to schools gave examples of their obligation to prevent discrimination under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The letter calls out discrimination based on shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics. It also includes actions that target people who are or are perceived to be Sikh, South Asian, Hindu, Palestinian, Jewish, Israeli, and Muslim.
