It tests your ability to use context and grammatical cues to identify words that complete a reading text. The PTE Reading Fill in the Blanks assesses the reading skill of the test taker. Writing, speaking and listening skills are not tested by this question type. Only in one of the two types of fill in the blanks task, the two skills, i.e. reading and writing are tested.

- How to answer PTE Part 2 - Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks (Task 1 of PTE Reading): In this task, a prompt of length 300 words with several blanks will be presented on the screen. Candidates will have to select only the right response from the dropdown menu for each blank. To get the option from the drop-down list, you will have to left click on it and select your response.
- How to answer PTE Reading - Fill in the Blanks (Task 4 of PTE Reading): In this task, a prompt of length 80 words with a few blanks will be presented on the screen. To answer this question, you will have to drag and drop the right words from the blue box given below the prompt. Note that there will be some extra words will be given in the box so, you will not have to choose all the words from the box. To select a word, left click on it and keep the left button on your mouse pressed till you drag and drop it to the right space in the prompt.
PTE Fill in the Blanks: Scoring
If the candidate is able to fill in all the blanks correctly, they would receive maximum score points. If one or more blanks are incorrectly filled, partial credit score applies.

- Candidates are advised to skim the entire text quickly ignoring the blanks. This will help them understand the topic.
- While reading: Fill in the blanks one by one. If you feel unsure of any particular blank. Skip it. The more blanks you fill in the easier the remaining ones will be
- Use language clues as well as world knowledge to fill in the blanks
- Pay attention to the grammar of the sentence. For example, if the blank should contain a plural noun, choose a plural noun from the blue box
- Pay attention to the pronouns and logical connectors in the text and choose words that maintain the right relationships
- Pay attention to conventional phrasing. Choose words that normally appear before or after the particular words on either side of the blanks.
- On completion, test takers are advised to re-read the text to check that it makes sense and make changes if necessary and re-read the text
- Test takers are advised to attempt all questions of this task type even if they are not sure of certain blanks. It is better to attempt than to leave empty blanks.
