PTE Score Reporting

Let us understand a PTE Score Report. The PTE Score Report is a detailed picture of a candidates’ language proficiency, covering their overall English scores, as well as scores for individual sub-skills. Each PTE Score Report would have the following components

PTE Score Chart: Overall Score

The Overall Score on the PTE Score Card is based on the candidate’s performance across the entire test. The candidate would be required to complete between 52 and 64 tasks in any given test and a range of 20 different task types. The overall score ranges between 10–90 points. Note: the overall score is not an average calculation of the communicative skills scores.

PTE Score Chart: Communicative Skills Scores

The communicative skills are listening, reading, speaking, and writing and their score range are 10–90 points. Some tasks assess more than one skill at the same time and they are called integrated skills tasks (assessing reading and speaking, listening and speaking, reading and writing, listening and writing or listening and reading). The scores on these tasks contribute to the score of both communicative skills that are assessed at the same time.

PTE Score Calculator 2024

PTE Academic adheres to automated scoring technology (AI). The PTE test scores marked by the system are at par with the scoring obtained from human experts who are carefully trained to consider only relevant language skills. The automated scoring system is based on complex algorithms that were trained by testing a data sample of over 10,000 students with over 120 native languages.

PTE tests are computer-based and machine-scored, human expert scorers are used to train the scoring engine on speaking and writing tasks, by rating test-taker responses on every single speaking and writing item. The system then works by replicating the standards established through these human ratings. Thousands of human marks are fed into the system to build this database and now the standard error measurement between automated scoring technology and a human rater is less than between one human rater to another.

Benefits of Using Automated Scoring Technology

Below are the advantages of automated scoring technology used by PTE Scoring.

  • Automated scoring allows individual features of a language sample (spoken or written) to be analyzed independently so that weakness in one area of language does not affect the scoring of other areas.
  • Research supports that, in many ways, automated scoring gives more analytical, objective results than humans do. Unlike human judgment, which is prone to be influenced by a variety of factors, an automated scoring system is impartial.
  • The automated scoring technology “acts” like a human rater when assessing test takers’ language skills, but does so with the precision, consistency and objectivity of a machine.
  • Stakeholders can be confident that a test taker’s scores are “generalizable” – that they would have earned the same score if the test had been administered in India, Malaysia or Japan.

  • The spoken portion of PTE Academic is automatically scored using Pearson’s Ordinate technology. Ordinate technology is the result of years of research in speech recognition, 5 statistical modellings, linguistics and testing theory. The technology uses a proprietary speech processing system that is specifically designed to analyze and automatically score speech from native and non-native speakers of English.

An Overview of PTE Scoring

PTE Score Calculator: There are two ways by which PTE scores are awarded. While PTE scores for some tasks are based only on whether the response is correct or incorrect, others are based on correctness, formal aspects (e.g., whether it is over or under the word limit) and the quality of the response (e.g., fluency and pronunciation in the task Retell lecture).

Correct or Incorrect Scoring

Some tasks are scored as either correct or incorrect. If responses are correct, 1 score point will be given, but if they are incorrect, no points are awarded.

Partial Credit Scoring

Other tasks are scored as correct, partially correct or incorrect. If responses to these tasks are correct, the maximum score points available will be received. If they are only partly correct, some score points will be given, but less than the maximum available. If responses are incorrect, no score points will be received.

Trait Scoring

While every task would be judged for communicative skills. Tasks would also be judged for Traits. Traits such as Pronunciation, Oral Fluency, Content, Form, vocabulary, grammar and so on. Some tasks that involve speaking and writing are also given a score for a trait. Individual traits associated with every task is mentioned below for the convenience of our readers. The scores for Content and Form contribute to overall and communicative skills scores. When the response is scored as 0 for Content or Form, no score points for the response will be given.

PTE Score Calculator FAQs

Q. How much is an IELTS score of 7 in PTE Academic?

A. The PTE score equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.0 lies in the range of 66-75. This PTE score implies a B2 level of CEFR fluency which means you are able to understand the academic level of English instructions and participate in routine communication.

Q. What are different PTE scores bands?

A. The PTE score is reported on a scale of 10 to 90, with 90 being the highest achievable score. This single score reflects your overall English language proficiency. Here is a general understanding of what different PTE score ranges might indicate:

  1. PTE Scores 85-90 - CEFR Equivalent C2: It is the highest measurable fluency by the PTE exam. This exceptional range signifies near-native fluency in English. Test-takers at this level can express themselves spontaneously and handle complex academic or professional situations requiring a high level of  English proficiency effortlessly. Universities abroad do not usually require scores this high for admissions.
  2. PTE Scores 76-84 - CEFR Equivalent C1: This impressive range demonstrates a very good command of English. You can effectively communicate in a variety of academic and professional settings, expressing yourself clearly and confidently. However, this level of PTE score is generally not required for undergraduate admissions but required for the Australian Skilled Migration Visas.
  3. PTE Scores 59-75 - CEFR Equivalent B2: This is the desired level of fluency required for admissions to any UG or PG course abroad. This level is needed to understand academic instructions and to engage in interactions with peers. This level of fluency also qualifies one for employment, professional registration and getting an Australian skilled migration visa.
  4. PTE Scores 43-58 - CEFR Equivalent B1: These scores may be accepted for UG level of academic studies. Students with this level of fluency can understand clear standard input on familiar topics/subjects they are encountered with regularly during their work, classes or self-study time.
  5. PTE Scores 30-42 - CEFR Equivalent A2: Not a desired score for getting admitted to any higher course, but can be accepted for getting to the foundation year courses. This range suggests a limited level of English proficiency. You might face challenges communicating complex ideas or understanding nuanced language.  Further language development might be required for most academic or professional settings.

Any score below the above-mentioned scores are usually not acceptable for admissions to any higher or foundation year courses.
