PTE Score Chart: Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic is a popular computer-based English language test accepted by educational institutions around the world. PTE Score Chart 2024: The full form of PTE is the Pearson Test of English and the PTE – Academic (also known as PTE-A) is a computer-based English language test required by international students to get to the top universities in the world. The PTE Academic is accepted for admission to top universities/destinations abroad that use English as their primary medium of communication/training. Conducted by Pearson PLC Group, PTE consists of four sections viz. reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

The PTE-A exam is conducted round-the-year and PTE Academic exam scores remain valid for a period of two years from the day of the exam. All About the PTE Score Chart 2024

The PTE scores are typically available within 48 hours of taking the PTE exam. Candidates are required to sign in on the "My PTE" portal with their credentials and find their PTE overall scores. The PTE scores are awarded on a scale of 10-90. Candidates have the liberty to share their score reports online with an unlimited number of universities, for free. 

The PTE results include a detailed picture of the candidates’ language proficiency, covering their overall English score, as well as scores for individual sub-skills. The PTE results would have the following components

1. PTE Score Report: Overall Score

The overall score on the PTE score chart is based on the candidate’s performance across the entire test. The candidate would be required to complete multiple tasks that can be found in our PTE Exam Pattern guide. The PTE Score Report contains the test taker's overall scores plus their individual scores across different sections. The test is graded against the Global Scale of English (GSE) on a scale of 10-90 points. This report strongly highlights the strengths and areas for improvement of the test taker.

2. PTE Skills Profile

The Communicative Skills Scores are listening, reading, speaking, and writing sections and their score range is 10–90 points for each skill. Some tasks assess more than one skill at the same time and they are called integrated skills tasks. More details can be found on our PTE Syllabus page. The Skills Profile gives you an idea of your proficiency across different English language skills along with some personal recommendations on how to improve these skills.

PTE Score Chart in Bands – What does your PTE Score mean?

Now we are going to be talking about different PTE scores in bands and what they mean to universities/visa officers when they look at your PTE scorecard. But first, let us check the PTE Score Chart and their CEFR level equivalents.

1. PTE Band Score: 85-90







This is the highest level of English ability that can be measured. At this level, the candidate would be extremely comfortable engaging in academic and work activities at all levels. At this level, test takers:

  • Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
  • Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

Required for: Typically, universities or governments don’t request scores this high.

2. PTE Band Score: 76 – 84

This is a very high level of English proficiency. This level of English is generally not required for undergraduate courses. At this level, test takers:

  • Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning.
  • Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Required for: Australian Skilled Migration Visas

3. PTE Band Score: 59 – 75

At this level, test takers:

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.
  • Can interact with a degree of oral fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Required for: Typically, this is the level required to be able to follow academic level instruction and to participate in academic education, including both coursework and student life, and maybe set for undergraduate or post-graduate entry requirements. This is also the level required for professional registration and employment, and also for Australian skilled migration visas.

4. PTE Academic Score: 43 – 58

At this level, test takers:

  • Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst in an area where the language is spoken.
  • Can produce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Required for: Typically, this may be required for the undergraduate level study.

5. PTE Academic Score: 30 - 42

At this level, test takers:

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g., very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Required for: Typically, this level is too low to engage in academic coursework, but may be set for Foundation Year courses.

6. PTE Academic Score: 10 - 29

At this level, test takers:

  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Required for: Typically, this level is too low to engage in academic coursework or Foundation Year courses.

Q:   What is PTE Academic Exam pattern?

The pattern of the PTE exam which lasts for two hours is very simple. The PTE exam pattern is designed to assess the English language Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening skills of the test taker in three parts. Since the PTE Academic exam is an integrated skills test, more than one skill gets tested by the medium of each of these 3 parts. The patterns of Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of the PTE exam are given below:

  1. Part 1- Speaking & Writing: This section takes around 54–67 minutes to get completed and contains 7 different question types. This part assesses the English speaking and writing skills of the test taker in an academic environment.
