A Statement of Purpose (SOP) forms an important part of your application during the admission process to universities abroad. Usually, universities ask for an SOP or a Personal Statement (PS) to outline your interests, goals, and why you seek to study that particular course in that particular university. However, most German universities ask for a Letter of Motivation or an LOM for Germany. The SOP for German universities is not much different from a Personal Statement other than the fact that each university will have certain requirements as to how the Motivation Letter should be framed and what should be included.

The letter of motivation must not be confused with a visa SOP for Germany. The LOM is often referred to as a ‘goals essay’, since it talks majorly about your academic and professional aspirations. • Conclusion: Summarise your main points and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the programme in your SOP’s conclusion. Describe why you decided to apply to this programme in Germany, particularly, and why you think you would be a good addition to it.

Remember to adhere to any additional instructions supplied by the university you are applying to, such as word limits or specific SOP content requirements, in addition to this format. Your SOP should make you stand out as a competitive applicant for admission to a German institution with a clear outline and some careful editing.

SOP for Germany: Dos and Don’ts

Now that you know what to write, let us take a look at what mistakes to avoid while writing your SOP/ LOM for German universities and what to keep in mind.

• Your Motivation Letter should not be more than two pages as lengthy drafts tend to make readers lose interest even if you have a great profile to discuss.
• Avoid the use of flowery language or over-the-top vocabulary. Conciseness and clarity of the document are what the Ad Com require in your document while conveying your academic intent.
• Do not stray from the context of the draft. Avoid detailed storytelling and going into unnecessary details as the reader will lose interest quickly.
• Try to keep your document distinct, brief, and effective. Remember that the Ad Com goes through thousands of applications, thus, your draft needs to be catchy and different from the rest.
• Do not overwrite or over-explain anything. Just provide enough explanation about your academic or professional achievements and learnings.

• Your SOP should not look like a copy of your resume. Here, you need to talk about things that are not covered in the resume.
• Avoid jumping from one narrative to another. If you are following a chronological order, then stick to it. Do not inter-change narratives in between paragraphs.
• Mind your grammar tenses and voices. It is a good practice to give a thorough grammatical check after you have written a rough draft and do not forget to give a final check before submitting the document.
• Do not finalise the first draft that you have written. It is suggested to write at least two drafts before finalizing one. Take your time and write at least two different SOPs. Revisit them a day later and see which appeals to you more. Sit down with family or friends and do reiterations wherever required.
• Even if you are taking the help of your family or friends, restrict the number of reviewers, else you will be left more confused as different people will have different suggestions.

When writing an SOP for Germany, it is wise you mention your reasons for pursuing the course in Germany and not in your home country. Discuss if the program is available in your home country, and what are your reasons/goals behind pursuing it in Germany.
