Chalmers University of Technology is a private research university located in Gothenburg, Sweden. The university was named after William Chalmers, director of Swedish East India Company. Chalmers is a member of the European University Association and the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER). The Chalmers is famous for its research and education in Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. What are the eligibility requirements?

 

The Chalmers University of Technology has set some standard eligibility requirements for international students based on their performance and academic excellence. Indian students must meet the following requirements:

  • Higher Secondary Certificate Examination
  • Intermediate Examination Certificate
  • All India Senior School Certificate Examination
  • Pre-University Education Certificate
  • Indian School Certificate (ISC)
  • Certificate of Vocational Education (CVE)
  • Polytechnic Diploma/Diploma Examination Certificate

The candidates need to submit their upper secondary Examination Certificate with a Statement of Marks issued by a nationally recognised board (certificates issued by the school will not be accepted)

What all documents are required for the application?

 

International students must submit standard documents for secondary and post-secondary studies. Students can submit the documents either in Swedish or English. Application & Tuition Fees

 

Is there any application fees?

 

The international students are required to pay SEK 900 at the time of application. The application fee is non-refundable. It is an administrative fee. No scholarships offered by the university cover the application fee.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

 

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

 

The university offers several scholarships to international students administered studying at bachelor's and master's level courses at the university. The scholarships offered by the university include the Avancez Scholarships, The IPOET Scholarship, The Sievert Larsson Scholarship Fund, etc. All the students who are good in academics and need financial help can apply for scholarships. The scholarship department scrutinizes the applications and selects the students.

The scholarships are awarded based on financial need and merit scores. The amount of scholarships varies from departments and the merit scores of the students. It ranges from SEK 8,500 to SEK 280,000 per year.

How to Apply?

Students can apply for scholarships along with their admission application. Apply for bachelors’ or master’s programmes, rank your programmes, and make sure that you meet the scholarship requirements. Submit your application.

Eligibility Criteria for International Students

  •        Students must be enrolled in the university’s degree programme
  •        Enrolled in a degree programme for more than one year
  •        Have a legal study permit

Some master’s programmes require different eligibility criteria. Students can check the master’s studies webpage.

Deadline: International students can apply for scholarships between November 17 and January 18 every year. Students must apply a year in advance. In case you miss your deadlines, you can apply for next year. For more details, students can check the scholarship webpage of the university.

What are the steps to the application process?

 

International students can apply to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the Chalmers University of Technology via the university's admission portal.

Step 2 – Create an account. If you are an existing user, simply log in and if you are a new user, create an account using your email address. If you have an eduID, you can log in using the ID number. Fill in all the details, like name, phone number, address, citizenship details, gender, etc.

Students might hear back from the university within 4-6 weeks. In some cases, it might take longer as all the applications will be scrutinized with the university's norms and policies. Part Time Work While Studying

 

Can I work while studying here?

 

Students can work on and off-campus while pursuing their study programme. If students have a valid study permit, they are allowed to work. The Chalmers University of Technology allows students to work on and off-campus:

1. On-campus

The international students are allowed to work on-campus if they are enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s or master’s programme. Students are allowed to work for 40 hours on a university project, full-time work employment on-campus. Students can volunteer to work in the university's research programme as a part-time job.

2. Off-campus

Students are allowed to work only for 20 hours off-campus while studying. Students can check local job listings on online websites, like LinkedIn, Indeed, or newspapers or magazines.

The university provides Erasmus Traineeship to the students who are interested in completing a traineeship in Europe. Students can complete the traineeship in several research centers, organisations, and big companies. International students can apply for scholarships/traineeship any time of the year, except between Jul and Aug. Interested students can apply within 30 days before the starting date of a traineeship.

Students can apply for both part-time and full-time on-campus internships. The university offers Research, Science, and Engineering internships to international students.

Eligibility:

International students must have a –

  • SIN number
  • Valid study permit
  • Enrolled in a study programme for more than a year
  • Started the study course

Candidates can apply for a student visa in Sweden. The required documents are:

  • Valid passport
  • Admission in a full-time university degree
  • Paid tuition fee
  • Account statement
  • Applied for health insurance in Sweden, if the duration of stay is less than a year

Students have to fill in an online application form at Swedish Migration Agency Portal to apply for a visa. Enter the required information and provide necessary documents. The process will take 3-4 months. The fee for the visa process is SEK 1,500.

Campuses & Accommodation

 

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

 

The Chalmers University of Technology operates from its two campuses, viz.

Chalmers Tech Campuses

Campus Johanneberg is the closest and has the majority of the students with 8,500 out of 10,000. Campus Lindholmen is located at the Port of Gothenburg and has the remaining 1,500 students.

The university also has an Onsala Space Observatory, 45 km south of Gothenburg, and a Swedish facility for Radio Astronomy.

 

Is on-campus housing available? How much does it cost?

 

Gothenburg is famous for its study and universities. However, it is difficult to find housing accommodations for the students. On-campus housing is not available. The Chalmers University of Technology offers off-campus housing accommodations to the students. The university has agreements with the student housing agencies, like Chalmers Studentboastader and SGS Studentboastader. The annual housing cost of the university is SEK 68,200.

For private housing accommodations, students can check blocket.se, movetogothenburg.com, Sweden.se for private landlords' listings. Private landlord housing facilities include water, electricity, Wi-Fi, furniture, and heating. Students can find reasonable houses within an hour-long commute from the university. It costs around SEK 4,000 to SEK 6,500. The family rent for an apartment would cost around SEK 8,000 to SEK 12,000 per month.
