History
Queen’s University Belfast was founded by Royal Charter in 1845. The university was made up of three Queen’s Colleges – in Cork, Belfast, and Galway. The most important date in the early years of the university’s life was 1908 when the three Queen’s Colleges and Royal University were dissolved and replaced by the Queen’s University of Belfast and the National University of Ireland. The main building of the university was built in 1849 by Sir Charles Lanyon. In 1909, there were 600 students at the university, and now, there are over 24,000 students from the UK and Ireland and more than 80 other countries. Note that the world’s renowned poet Seamus Heaney won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. In 2020, the university celebrated its 175th anniversary.
