Rooting back to 1828, the Uni Central Lancashire started its journey as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. In the honor of Edmund Robert Harris, who donated a substantial amount, the university was renamed as the Harris Institute in 1882. Later in 1956, it became the Harris College, following a government re-organisation of technical education. When the university was designated by the Central Government as a polytechnic, it became the Preston Polytechnic in 1973, and in 1984, it was renamed as the Lancashire Polytechnic.
In 1992, when the Government bestowed degree awarding powers to polytechnics, the university acquired its current name - University of Central Lancashire. In 2007, the university released its logo to draw focus on the short name UCLan.
