History
The University of Georgia was established in 1785. It was established by the Georgia General Assembly as the first-state chartered university in the US. Then, in 1872, UGA became a land-granting institute. The university closed in 1863 due to Civil War and re-opened in 1866. A new chancellor was appointed in 1899, Walter B. Hill who became the first UGA alumnus to lead the university. In 1937, student enrollment at the university reached 3,000 and almost 4,000 by 1941.
