History

Michigan State University was founded in 1855. The first classes were started with 63 students. In the year 1862, this university became America’s premier land-granting university. In 1870, the first women students were admitted to the university. In 1873, first international students enrolled. In 1931, the university was accredited by the Association of American Universities. After a lot of name changes, in 1964, the name Michigan State University was created. In 1970, Clifton Wharton became the first African-American president at MSU or at any major university in the US. In 2005, the enrollment at the university reached 45,000.
