Around 48% of the total international students were studying in the USA in 2024 and with a prediction of an increase of 25% in 2025, the US is awaiting a majority of Indian student’s applications. Indian students usually have a 3-year bachelor’s degree and cannot apply to US universities accepting 4-year bachelor’s for master’s admission. This article throws light on how to counter this problem of getting accepted to US universities with a 3-year bachelor’s degree for all international students who come from an educational system where a bachelor’s is 3 years only.

Along with India, other countries students face a similar issue, these countries include - Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Jamaica, India, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and any country that is a participant in the Bologna Process.

Indian Education System

In India, the education system is divided into lower primary, primary, elementary or middle school and high school followed by college or university education. In total Indian students have 16 educational years at school along with three-four years in graduation, and 2 years of post-graduation. Check out the table below for more details:

Indian Education System Total Years of Completion
Primary Education 2 years
Elementary Education 8 years
Secondary School Education 2 years
High School Education 2 years
University Education - Graduation 3 years (ideally) | 4 years (Engineering)
University Education - Post Graduation 2 years

So technically Indian students applying at US universities will have 17 years of education if applying for a master's degree, which is acceptable at some universities and not acceptable at others. The thumb rule is to have 4 years of bachelor’s for US university admission for a master’s, but in India, the 4-year bachelor’s is only for engineering students. To have an exception to this 4-year bachelor’s rule, there are a few US universities that accept 3-year bachelor’s for master’s admission.
