History
Binghamton University was created as a Triple Cities College in 1946 with the sole purpose of serving the needs of local veterans who were returning from service in World War II. Initially, the college was located in Endicott, New York just five miles west of where the campus stands today. After four years, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York and was renamed Harpur College in remembrance and honor of Robert Harpur who was a Colonial teacher, patriot, and pioneer. In 1961, Harpur College was identified as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY (State University of New York) system. In 1965, the campus of the university was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton and came to be known as Binghamton University in 1992.
