Howard Payne University: Courses, Admission, Cost

Affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Howard Payne University (HPU) is a highly-ranked public institution of higher education in Brownwood City of Texas, United States. Originally known as Howard Payne College, it was established by the Pecan Valley Baptist Association at Indian Creek in the year 1889. It was in 1974 that the institution became a university under its current name upon the consent of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It has accreditation from the Commission on Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. HPU holds sports affiliation from the National Collegiate Athletic Association under Division III.

The main campus of HPU is located in a beautiful setting, close to the business district of Brownwood. The campus is spread over an area of 80 acres and consists of more than 45 buildings, green patches, walkways and parking spaces. The well-maintained buildings on the campus house administrative offices and academic facilities like high-tech laboratories, smart classrooms and lecture halls with modern equipment and technology. The site also features a wide range of recreational and support facilities for the convenience of students.

Almost 100% of the freshmen students stay in the campus accommodations provided by the university. The campus features several food outlets and dining options where students can relish delicious and healthy food and beverages. Further, the university has its Food and Essentials Pantry to meet the basic needs of the students. Other on-campus facilities include a chapel, photocopy centre, mailroom, wellness centre and counselling office. Also, Stringer Shuttle service is provided by the institution. Apart from this, it operates two extension campuses in the cities of El Paso and New Braunfels.

HPU offers four graduate degree programmes as well as over 100 majors, minors and pre-professional programmes across different disciplines. At present, more than 1171 students from various countries of the world are pursuing their degrees at the university. The total enrolment comprises about 47.6% female students and 52.4% males. Average class size at the university consists of 14 students. In addition, HPU extends an active athletic program for sports like football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis and golf. It also has a membership of the American Southwest Conference. Further, the Students' Association operates more than 25 departmental, religious, service, greek and honorary organizations that promote leadership skills, build relationships, cultural unity and mutual respect.

HPU maintains a comprehensive list of alumni from across the globe, which also includes the names of many popular personalities who have gained a lot of recognition and respect for contribution in their respective professional fields. Coffey Anderson (American Singer and Songwriter), Kenneth Sanders (Football Defender), Jim Reese (Businessman and Politician), Herschel Ray Jacobs (Former Professional Footballer), Kenneth Don Gray (Footballer), William Bryan Harris (Baseball Pitcher), Cynthia Clawson (Grammy Award-Winning Gospel Singer) and Robert Allen Young (Football Player) are the names of few of HPU's notable alumni.
