In 1961, the need for an adult education program for the local public school in Portland was realized and the Portland Community College was set up. The founding president was Amo DeBernardis who had served from 1961 to 1979.
Portland Community College has 4 major campuses. The biggest one is the Sylvania Campus. It opened in 1968. It is situated between Lake Oswego and Tigard. It houses about 23,280 students each year. This campus has 4 student centers. They are the Queer Resource Center, Multicultural Center, Veterans Resource Center, and Women's Resource Center. The second campus of PCC is known as the Rock Creek Campus. It is a 260-acre spacious campus located in the high-tech corridor near Hillsboro. It opened in 1976. Along with the 4 Student Resource Centers at the Sylvania Campus, this campus has a DREAM Center too. This campus serves about 20,000 students every year. There are 214 permanent art installations at this campus.
The Cascade campus has a small campus in spite of being in the heart of Portland. It opened in 1971. PCC's newest campus is known as the Southeast Campus. A rich cultural blend can be witnessed here with the growth of Chinese, Vietnamese, Latino, Russian, and Ukrainian people. This campus was opened in 1981. Apart from the campuses, Portland Community College has various Centers like the CLIMB Center, Swan Island Trades Center, Willow Creek Center, Newberg Center and others.
