Texas Southern University: Courses, Admission, Cost

The beginning of Texas Southern University (TSU) can be traced back to the establishment of Houston Colored Junior College on 14^th September 1927. It was established to provide African-Americans with an opportunity to receive college training. It received the approval of the Southern Association of Colleges in 1931. The institute was transformed into a four-year college in 1934 and was renamed Houston College for Negroes. With the establishment of a law school for Negroes, it became Texas State University for Negroes in February 1946. The university was given its existing name on 1^st June 1951. At present, it consists of 11 schools and colleges. Also, it holds the accreditation of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

Situated in Houston, Texas, the TSU campus is spread across 150 acres of land. It is home to 45 buildings including three professional schools, a performance theatre, a music recital hall renowned for its acoustics, a radio station, a physical education, and health complex with an arena that has a seating capacity of 7,200 people, several dormitories and numerous recreational facilities. The Robert James Terry Library can accommodate more than 1,000 people and features over 349,969 microfilms and 452,850 books. The campus houses more than 80 student organizations. The extracurricular activities offered range from fitness sessions involving weight lifting and yoga to outdoor sports like soccer, basketball, football, dodge ball, and volleyball.

TSU offers over 100 undergraduate, graduate, and online degree programs, as well as professional courses in a variety of fields such as business, public affairs, education, science, engineering, arts, behavioral science, pharmacy, health science, communication, law, languages, psychology and computer science. Currently, the university houses over 9,200 students and more than 1,400 staff members. Although 83% of the student population belongs from Texas, the remaining 7% comes from various countries across the world including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Nigeria, Kuwait, and the Bahamas. TSU also has a career center that provides excellent career development services to help students in pursuing their career goals. The center organizes career fairs to assist students in securing a job in one of the many visiting companies.

TSU has a huge alumni network that includes successful and distinguished educators, public servants, entrepreneurs, pilots, lawyers, artists and many more. Michael Strahan and Ernie Holmes are famous football players. Yolanda Adams is a renowned gospel singer, actress and record producer who used to host her own morning gospel radio show. Kenneth M. Hoyt serves as a Senior United States District Judge. Jennifer Holliday is a Grammy-winning singer and recording artist known for the 'Dreamgirls' number "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". Barbara Jordan was an educator, lawyer, and politician who led the Civil Rights Movement. George "Mickey" Leland was a U.S. congressman.
