History
UNT was founded as Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute by Joshua C. Chilton in the city of Denton. Initially, it taught around 70 students. Soon, the diplomas it offered were recognised as the State Teacher Certificates. 1894 saw it rename itself to the North Texas Normal College. In 1899, it was recognised as a state college. 1901 again saw it change its name to the North Texas State Normal College. It was used as a training ground by the US Army during the two World Wars. Post that, it was given the right to award its own UG and PG degrees. 1961, saw it acquire its present-day name.
