University of Wisconsin Milwaukee History
The Wisconsin State State Normal School had first opened classes for students in 1885. Later in 1919, the school had moved from downtown to its current location near the lakefront when Mitchell Hall was completed. By the year 1956, Wisconsin State College Milwaukee had merged with the University of Wisconsin Extension's Milwaukee division to form the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
Between 1956 and 1971, UW Milwaukee and UW Madison and the affiliated 10 freshman-sophomore centers and statewide extensions had become part of the University of Wisconsin system.
