Western Washington University: Courses, Admission, Cost

Western Washington University (WWU) is a reputable state-funded university in Washington. WWU was established as a female-just school in 1893. Known by its present title since 1977, its previous names include New Whatcom Normal School and Western Washington College of Education. WWU has been presenting graduate degrees since 1947. Students can choose from more than 150 diverse subjects.

WWU rests 90 miles north of Seattle, and 55 miles south-east of Vancouver, the opposite side of the Canadian border. The campus is arranged between the Sehome Hill Arboretum and Bellingham Bay, where local people can catch ferries to several nearby islands. Western Washington University offers bachelor's programs, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Business Administration, Master of Professional Accounting, Master of Music and Doctor of Audiology.

The university is composed of the various colleges, including College of Business and Economics, College of Fine and Performing Arts, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science and Engineering, and Woodring College of Education. The undergraduate honours programme offers merit scholarships of up to $5,000. These grants are awarded to successful candidates to the honours programme. There is no requirement of a separate application. High-accomplishing freshmen from colleges in other western states can enlist at WWU with reduced tuition fee that is equal to a $30,000 four year grant.

Western Washington University's Vehicle Research Institute VRI works to offer the best total car design curriculum. The programme includes complete vehicle structure and manufactures with an emphasis on power plants, including alternative fuels; transmissions, chassis design, and component materials. The Center for Canadian American Studies at Western Washington University is one of the only two U.S. Branch of Education assigned National Resource Centers for the study of Canada in the United States. Huxley College of the Environment, established in 1969, was the major college committed to the study of environmental science and policy in the country.

The university has notable alumni. Ryan Couture (2004) is a professional Mixed Martial Artist formerly competing in the UFC, and son of former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. Eric Dinerstein (1975) is an author and director of Biodiversity and Wildlife Solutions with RESOLVE and former chief scientist for the World Wildlife Fund. Ben Gibbard from the class of 1998 is the lead vocalist and guitarist of Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service.
