History
Adelphi University was founded in 1896 however, the roots of the university can be traced back to 1863 when the Adelphi Academy was founded. Adelphi Academy was a private preparatory school located in Brooklyn. The then-principal of the Adelphi Academy, Charles H. Levermore aimed to expand the academy known for its innovative curriculum. Adelphi University became the first private university and started with just 57 students and 16 instructors. The University established its first School of Nursing in 1943 created primarily for the purpose of the requirement of nurses after the United States of America entered into World War II.
The post-war period witnessed the expansion of areas related to business at Adelphi University and the introduction of sports such as Basketball, football, swimming, wrestling, baseball, and track teams. In 1949, the university introduced the School of Social Work and over the years continued to launch multiple areas of study at the university.
