About Carnegie Mellon University
Founded in 1900, Carnegie Mellon University is a private global research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. CMU Pittsburgh is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Carnegie Mellon History
Carnegie University Pittsburgh was founded by Andrew Carnegie, a book lover who believed in the idea of My heart is in the work. It was established with the envision of being a school where working-class men and women of the city could learn practical skills, trades and crafts that would enhance their careers, lives and communities. With the growing demand, the Carnegie Technical Schools began offering bachelor's degrees through its College of Engineering and College of Fine Arts, becoming the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
In the 20th century, the university expanded from two buildings to a beautiful campus offering state-of-the-art facilities. In 1914, the first US drama degree was awarded in the university. Carnegie Mellon started offering graduate degree programs in the 1910s, and awarded the first doctorate degree in Civil Engineering to a Chinese student in 1919.
