IGNOU Highlights 2025
Indira Gandhi National Open University (popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University), established in 1985, is considered one of the prominent names for distance/ part-time education in India. IGNOU University began by offering two programmes in 1987, with a strength of approximately 4,500 students. Today, it serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad through its 21 schools, a network of 56 regional centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions. IGNOU Distance Education programmes are offered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) & Online Learning (OL) modes. The university offers more than 200 programmes at certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral levels.
IGNOU courses include BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BA, MA, MCA, MBA, MCom and others. Indira Gandhi National University is the largest university in the world, run by the Central Government of India. It has also been accredited by the NAAC with Grade 'A++'. IGNOU has students from over 40 countries. At present IGNOU offers over 200+ UG, PG, diploma, certificate and doctoral courses via regular distance and Online Distance Learning (ODL) mode. The IGNOU admission cycles are conducted twice a year, in January and July. The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UGC, and the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, organised a seminar on ‘Open University’ with UNESCO. Upon the recommendation of the seminar, the Government of India decided to establish an open university on an experimental basis. In 1974, an eight-member working group was formed, headed by G Parthasarathy, the then Vice-Chancellor of JNU, to monitor the establishment of the open university. Under the Working Group Report 1974, the recommendation to establish a national open university by an act of Parliament was proposed. IGNOU Scholarships 2025
IGNOU scholarships 2025 are offered to students belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST). The university also provides exemption/ reimbursement facilities time to time as per the rules of the university. Candidates can also apply for government scholarships. Students are also advised to collect the scholarship forms from the Directorate of Social Welfare or the office of the Social Welfare Officer of their State, fill them up and submit them to the Regional Director at the Regional Centre. In case a candidate misses the deadline for IGNOU registration, he or she can write mail or contact the admission office for assistance. In case nothing can be done, he or she then needs to register in the next cycle. IGNOU conducts admission in two cycles-January and June. Admission to most of the courses is based on merit of the aspirants in the last qualifying exam. In case of courses such as B.Ed, PhD and PB BSc Nursing, admissions are offered based on entrance exam scores.
Students who have applied for B.Ed, MBA or PB BSc Nursing must appear for the required entrance and check if they've qualified it. Followed by application, application fee payment and entrance, students who have completed their registration can check their status by entering their registration number on the IGNOU admission status page. The university also notifies students about their admission confirmation or rejection through an email and a text message in the next two months.
Candidates must be pass outs of any bachelor’s degree and/or in the master’s degree in Science/ Social Science/ Commerce/ Humanities with at least 50% aggregate or have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology with a specialisation in Science and Mathematics with a minimum of 55% aggregate. In the field of Education, IGNOU offers a B.Ed programme to students who've completed their bachelor's degree in any field. While the minimum duration to pursue B.Ed is two years, the maximum period allowed for completion is five years.

IGNOU University provides modern amenities with state-of-the-art infrastructure for its students under the Centre for Online Education (CoE). Conference Room: COE IGNOU has a large conference room which is used by all the schools and divisions for workshops, conferences, seminars, training and many more academic and administrative activities. It also has a Public Address System (PAS) for the smooth conduct of the activities and a seating capacity of more than 100 people.
Data Center: IGNOU Data Center houses high-end servers, firewalls, storage and a sophisticated network to house major applications of the centre such as eGyanKosh, web conferencing, webcasting, etc. Some components for supporting infrastructure include UPS, generators and redundant power sources, Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC) and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems among others.

Indira Gandhi National Open University offers BCom course of four-year duration. The UG-level programme is available in English and Hindi medium.
