History
The founding year of the University of Wollongong is 1951. After a decade, the Division evolved into the University of New South Wales' Wollongong College. The New South Wales Legislature officially recognized the university as a separate entity. The Wollongong Institute of Higher Education, which was founded in 1962 as the Wollongong Teachers' College, merged with the University in 1982. The Wollongong University was established as an independent university by legislation that was approved in 1975. UOW celebrated 40 years of independence in 2015.
