The China University of Petroleum, aka CUP, is an educational institution which imparts education in the field of energy and is dedicated to energy studies. It is a non-profit, national public university in China. The university was founded and established in the year 1953. It comprises the University of Petroleum, formerly known as the Beijing Petroleum Institute and is situated in the culturally rich and dynamic city of Beijing and the Huadong University of Petroleum, formerly known as the Huadong Petroleum Institute and is located in Huadong in Qingdao.
Both of these are considered as the best educational institutions in the area of energy and petroleum-related studies in China. The China University of Petroleum is under the administration of the Ministry of Education of China. The university is on a list named ‘211 Project’, which is a project of national key colleges and universities with the aim of raising the current research standards of high-level, higher education universities and cultivating various strategies for socio-economic development.
There are a total of 13 colleges at CUP, which include College of Geosciences, College of Petroleum Engineering, College of Chemical Engineering and Environment, College of Mechanical and Transportation Engineering, College of Geophysics, College of Information Science and Engineering, College of International Education, College of Science, College of Marxism, College of Social Sciences, College of Artificial Intelligence, College of New Energy and Material, and College of Safe and Off-shore Engineering. The three schools are the School of Economics and Management, the School of Foreign Languages, and the School of Online and Continuing Education. The Unconventional Oil and Gas Institute is also a part of the CUP.
Combined, these colleges offer a total of 174 courses in different streams at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate levels. The number of courses offered regarding levels of education is 27 bachelor’s programmes, 99 master’s programmes, and 48 doctorate programmes. The five national key specialties of the university are Oil and Gas Well Engineering, Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, Mineral Resources Prospecting and Exploration, and Chemical Engineering and Technology.
The faculties of the CUP are the main reason behind its position as a national leader in energy and other related subjects. There are a total of 1369 teachers in the China University of Petroleum, out of which 229 are professors and 274 are associate professors. They play an essential role in creating the rich academic environment that the university possesses. Currently, the university has approximately 14300 students enrolled in various courses, including 7663 undergraduate students, 5426 postgraduate students, 1076 doctorate students, and 832 overseas students from 52 different countries.
