How to calculate IELTS Band Scores 2025?
IELTS Score Banding: To calculate your IELTS Band Scores you just need to simply take out the mean (average) of all the sections’ scores, namely, Listening Band Score, Reading Band Score, Writing Band Score, and Speaking Band Score. With the IELTS band score calculator, you can get your Reading and Listening score and overall score. That is the sum of all the scores divided by four.
If the average comes out in a decimal point, then it will be rounded off to the nearest half or whole IELTS band. For instance, if the average comes out in 0.25, then it is rounded up to the next half band. So, in this case, if your average score is 6.25, then the final score will be counted as 6.5. In other cases where the average is .75, then it will be rounded off to the next whole band. Therefore, if you get a 6.75 band, the final IELTS band score will be taken as 7.

Commonly asked questions
Q: How is the IELTS Writing test marked?
IELTS Writing tests are marked by highly trained and monitored examiners, regardless of where the test is taken. At least two examiners will mark your Writing test, and sometimes up to three or four, to ensure the highest level of accuracy and fairness. Your Writing test response is scored in four areas:
- Task response: How well you have fulfilled the task requirements.
- Coherence and cohesion: How well your writing is organized and connected.
- Lexical resource: How varied and appropriate your vocabulary is.
- Grammatical range and accuracy: How well you use grammar and punctuation.
Each criterion is worth 25% of your total mark for that task. The examiner will give you a band score for Writing Task 1 and a band score for Writing Task 2. Then, your final IELTS Writing band score is calculated.
Q: How is the IELTS Listening test marked?
The IELTS Listening test consists of 40 questions, and you get one mark for each correct answer. Your total number of correct answers determines your "raw score, " which is then converted into a band score. It is important to try to answer every question, even if you are not sure of the answer. A blank answer will get you zero marks. The table below shows the average number of marks required to achieve a particular band score in the Listening test:
Number of correct answers (Raw Score) | IELTS Listening Band Score |
39-40 | 9.0 |
37-38 | 8.5 |
35-36 | 8.0 |
32-34 | 7.5 |
30-31 | 7.0 |
26-29 | 6.5 |
23-25 | 6.0 |
Q: How is the IELTS Speaking test marked?
The IELTS Speaking test is a natural conversation between you and a trained examiner. You will sit in a quiet room and talk about a variety of topics, including yourself, your interests, and current events. The examiner will ask you questions to help you demonstrate your speaking skills.
It is important to relax and be yourself during the Speaking test. The examiner is there to help you perform at your best. If you don't understand a question, or if you need more time to think about your answer, just ask. The examiner is happy to help.
Your speaking skills are marked against the following criteria:
- Fluency and coherence: How well you can speak smoothly and clearly, and how well your ideas are connected.
- Lexical resource: How varied and appropriate your vocabulary is.
- Pronunciation: How well you pronounce individual sounds and words.
- Grammatical range: How well you use different grammatical structures.
- Accuracy: How few grammar and pronunciation errors you make.
Your Speaking results are given as band scores which range from a band 0 to a band 9. Each whole and half band score corresponds to a level of English-language competence.
Q: How is the IELTS Reading test marked?
The IELTS Reading test consists of 40 questions of different types, such as multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, matching, and sentence completion. Your IELTS Reading score is based on how many of the 40 questions you answer correctly. Each correct answer is worth one point. Your total number of correct answers is your "raw score." This raw score is then converted into a band score. It is important to try to answer every question, even if you are not sure of the answer. A blank answer will get you no points. The tables below show the average number of marks required to achieve a particular band score in Academic Reading and General Training Reading.

Commonly asked questions
Q: What is a good IELTS score?
A good IELTS score can vary depending on your specific goals, such as study abroad requirements, visa applications, or employment opportunities. Different institutions and organizations may have different score requirements, so it is essential to research and understand the specific score expectations for your intended purpose. In general, a score of 6.5 or higher is considered a good IELTS score. However, this may differ based on the individual's needs and the requirements of the institution or organisation they are applying to.
Some universities and programs may have higher score requirements, especially for competitive programs or fields of study. It is crucial to review the score requirements of the institutions or organizations you are interested in and aim to achieve a score that meets their criteria. Additionally, consider your own personal goals and requirements when determining what constitutes a good IELTS score for you. Get more details at What is a good IELTS score?
Q: Is 7 a good IELTS band score?
Yes. If you score 7.0 or above in the IELTS examination, your score is considered a good score. Scoring 7.0 or above puts you in a safe zone where you clear cut-offs of most of the universities that require an IELTS score as proof of English-language proficiency. Getting a high score also helps you score well in the Canada Express Entry Pool, thereby increasing your chances of getting a PR. Hence, your aim must be to score as high as possible in any exam. Even though scoring high does not guarantee you a position in the top Universities, it improves your chances.
Q: What is the highest band in IELTS exam?
The highest band score that can be achieved in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam is 9.0. The IELTS band scores range from 0 to 9, with 0 representing a non-user and 9 representing an expert user of the English language. Each of the four sections of the IELTS exam (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) is individually graded on a band scale, and then an overall band score is calculated by taking the average of the individual scores. Achieving a band score of 9.0 indicates an exceptional level of English language proficiency across all sections of the exam.
