Iowa's Cornell College said that its four instructors were injured in "a serious incident" while at a park in China. The officials at the U.S. school and the State Department said that these instructors were teaching at Beihua University in northeastern China as part of a partnership program.

Jonathan Brand, the college's president, said in a statement that they were injured during a daytime visit to a public park. During the incident, the instructors were accompanied by a faculty member of the partner institution in China, added Brand, as reported by CBS News.

The State Department was aware of the incident of the stabbing of US instructors in China and was monitoring the situation.

As per Cornell spokesperson Jen Visser, the college was still gathering information on what exactly happened.

US Instructors Stabbing Incident Suppressed in China

China is a country where the government controls the information about anything considered sensitive. Hence, this incident was suppressed and no media outlet published about the incident. Some social media posts mentioned the incident but the hashtags were also blocked by the government.

"Four college instructors from #CornellCollege in #US who were teaching in China as part of a partnership with a local university were attacked in a park in Jilin, #China, college officials confirmed Monday," reads a message on X.

The incident happened at a time when both China and the US are seeking to maintain people-to-people exchanges to keep ties amicable and avoid tension over trade and other international issues such as Taiwan, the South China Sea and the war in Ukraine.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also recently revealed a plan to invite 50,000 young Americans to China in the next five years. Also, Chinese diplomats said that the US travel advisory has discouraged Americans from visiting China. State Department has issued a Level 3 travel advisory — the second highest warning level — for mainland China. The US told citizens to “reconsider travel” to China.
