Arizona State University retains No. 1 place in US, top 10 globally in UN SDGs ranking
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings have once again kept ASU at its number one position for the fifth consecutive year in the US and in the top-10 ranking globally for its work through education, research and practice in alignment with the SDGs.
Study in US: Times Higher Education announced the University Impact Rankings for 2024 identifying and celebrating the universities that excel across multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. For the fifth consecutive year, Arizona State University has retained its top position in this ranking in the United States and it is in the top-10 ranking globally for its work through education, research and practice in alignment with the SDGs. The university has also ranked No. 1 in the U.S. for 11 out of the 17 SDGs.
ASU President Michael M. Crow said, "ASU’s repeated top ranking is more than a point of pride, it is proof of our unwavering commitment to creating the change we want to see in the world. As a 21st-century university dedicated to finding solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, our ranking reflects our priorities and progress in areas that demand urgent attention.”
Key areas where ASU scored high
ASU's ranking was awarded for its leadership in these top three areas:
- It is at No.1 in SDG 14 which is life below water; ahead of North Carolina State University, Penn State University and the University of Georgia.
- At No. 2 for focused on sustainable cities which is represented by SDG 11. In this goal, the university is ahead of Michigan State University, Penn State University and MIT.
- It is No. 3 in the world for SDG 15, which explores life on land; ahead of Penn State University, Michigan State University and the University of Maryland.
The other Sustainable Development Goals in which ASU ranked No. 1 in the U.S. are - SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 7 (clean energy), SDG 10 (reduced inequalities), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions).
"THE evaluated 2,152 universities from 125 countries/regions to produce the overall Impact Ranking for 2024. Australia’s Western Sydney University tops the list for the third consecutive year. The UK’s University of Manchester and Australia’s University of Tasmania follow in joint second place. The top newcomer in 2024 is France’s Institut Agro at joint 21st. India is the most-represented country in the overall table, with 96 institutions," said the THE official statement.
