ASU Offers Unlimited Internships, Scholarships To Indian Students: President Crow
Shiksha spoke with Arizona State University President Michael M Crow about internship opportunities, scholarships and other opportunities for Indian students at their university.
Q: What makes your university attractive to international students, especially Indian students?
A: We're the number one destination for Indian students in the United States. We're attractive to Indian students and international students because of the number of majors that we have, the types of programs that we have, the speed of innovation that we have, the unbelievable open-mindedness that we have about how people can learn and how they can advance. And then I just think that people are attracted to a place that's, you know, state of the art technologically, but state of the art culturally and organizationally. So it's a very diverse campus.
Q: Which are the most popular courses among Indians at ASU?
A: I mean there's the obvious engineering, computer science, but also architecture, design, music, fine arts, economics, finance, business management, business communications, manufacturing, you know, all those areas.
Q: Which unique academic programs or research opportunities you are providing to international students?
A: Indian students can participate in anything in which international students can participate. They're not prohibited from anything. What I've noticed among our Indian students is that they're, almost all of them have jobs, they're working on campus, they're working in research labs, they're working in offices, they're carrying heavy loads and having fun and enjoying themselves. And so it's just a fully immersive place. The jobs pay between $13 and $30 an hour for students or their teaching assistants or research assistants.
Q: What about internship opportunities at Arizona State University?
A: They're unlimited. I mean, so whatever the student wants to work in and then they have OPT opportunities, employment after they graduate. I mean, so those are unlimited. Almost all of our kids who want OPT from India, get OPT, employment.
Q: Do they get placed from campus?
A: They can, yes, totally.
Q: How do you make sure that they feel included and not feeling homesick?
A: Well, so two of our student body leaders, we have multiple Indian students who are elected presidents of our student bodies. They're involved in student government, they're involved in everything. They just have been completely absorbed into the institution. And they're a powerful force in the institution. They're at the sporting events, they're at the football games, they're at the basketball games, everything.
Q: What about the scholarship opportunities at Arizona State University?
A: They have scholarship opportunities, they have work opportunities, they have assistantships in teaching and research opportunities. There's no limit to them.
Q: Recently, US government selected Arizona State University Research Park as the planned site for America R&D Flagship Facility's Third CHIPS. Would you like to tell us something about your being at the top in Chip technology and science?
A: We won three major new laboratories, and we won the siting of the big packaging lab for $3 billion. TSMC is spending $70 billion building three new boundaries there. Intel is spending $20 billion to build a new foundry there. There are hundreds of companies that are now there, all kinds of things. Phoenix in Arizona, the big city in Arizona, is now the semiconductor research, training and manufacturing hub in the United States.
Q: Ok, so as I understand it will also increase the placement opportunities for students?
A: yes, huge opportunities for employment, and internships.
