Brown University Launches New Online Master’s Degree Program In Data Science

Study in US: The program will start in September 2025 with its first cohort of students. It is a 16-month-old course in data science which focuses on governance, policy and society.

Brown University Launches New Online Master’s Degree Program In Data Science

Brown University has introduced a new online master’s degree program in data science. It will focus on the role of data in governance and policy. This program has a balance of the technological side of data science and the social impacts of machine learning and big data.

The course will make the students leaders in handling data and will provide them with analytic abilities. The last date to apply for Early Action is March 15, 2025. The application deadline is June 1, 2025. The degree offered will be - Master of Science (Sc.M.): Coursework and an applied learning experience.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are the eligibility criteria for the online course:

  • The candidate must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institute.
  • A minimum of one semester of college-level statistics are needed.
  • The students must have prior experience in programming languages. Experience in Python language is preferred, other languages which are accepted include SAS, STATA, R, Julia, etc.
  • A minimum of two years of full-time professional employment experience is required.
  • TOEFL/IELTS scores are required from non-native English speakers.
  • Three recommendations are needed, of which one should be from a professional supervisor/manager.

"The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition and the IELTS Indicator exam are accepted. The data science program prefers scores above 620 (pBT) or 105 (iBT). The corresponding minimum IELTS score is 7.5," says the official statement.

"Students in the online program will have access to the same learning resources as in-person students. This includes Brown University’s extensive collection of library and information resources such as the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning’s English language support and Writing Center; Student Accessibility Services and telehealth services," added the official statement.








Linda Clark, a senior lecturer in data science and the director of undergraduate studies at the DSI said, "The in-person program is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the methods and algorithms of data science,” reported DSI Website.







“The world is paying close attention to AI now — and even closer attention to how we deploy AI systems in ways that are responsible and that centre the needs and aspirations of all of us," said Suresh Venkatasubramanian, a professor of data science and the interim director of the DSI.
