Brown University unveils facility for integrated life sciences research
The state-of-the-art laboratory has enough natural light, a plentiful interior, a street-level education lab and exterior gathering spaces.
Study in US: Brown University unveiled a planned facility for integrated life sciences research, grounded in the concepts of connection, innovation and flexibility.
The facility intends to provide a platform for scientists from multiple fields to solve complex medical and interconnected health challenges.
University President Christina H. Paxson said, "Danoff Laboratories, which will become the largest academic laboratory building in Rhode Island, is a signature project in Brown’s commitment to advancing research for impact. Brown has bold aspirations to develop a biomedical ecosystem where innovations can move seamlessly from research and discovery to solutions with direct, real-life impact for patients and communities. Central to this vision is this cutting-edge research facility where Brown’s exceptional faculty, students and staff will work together to tackle some of the most daunting challenges facing human health globally.”

The project will serve as a catalyst for Providence’s Jewelry District growth.
“We started from the idea that science is a collective endeavor, and therefore a social one, the facility will offer a welcoming public presence. We started from the idea that science is a collective endeavor, and therefore a social one," said Noah Biklen, a Brown Class of 1997 graduate and senior principal of TenBerke who is leading the project design team.
“We're introducing new ideas of transparency and connection in terms of how a research building engages the street, where there’s a real sense of permeability to the shared public realm. We're very excited about how, architecturally, we've been able to create an attractive, sustainable research environment for scientists that will also serve visitors and the broader community for years to come," added Biklen.
Brown University named the facility William A. and Ami Kuan Danoff Life Sciences Laboratories
In recognition of a generous gift from the couple, the university named the facility William A. and Ami Kuan Danoff Life Sciences Laboratories. The facility is spread over a 300,000-square-foot area and is a seven-story building.
“Scientists at Brown are engaged in groundbreaking work to pursue new discoveries on many of the world’s most daunting health challenges, and a cutting-edge space like Danoff Laboratories promises to expand and accelerate the difference we can make. This incredibly generous gift from the Danoffs marks a significant milestone in transforming our vision for the integrated life sciences at Brown into reality, and it will benefit generations of researchers, students, patients and populations," added Paxson.
